Children, young people of both geneder and women have been often neglected in general history. This course shows that without them, general history cannot be told as such. The relevance of the historical perspective for a better understanding and awareness of the present with special relevance for the aim of this curriculum.

Teaching Methods
Lectures and seminars with presentation and discussion of sources and research projects (movies,
iconographical and archival sources). Students are encouraged to have an active participation, and to create their own proposal.

Course program
The course consists of a I part on the variety of approaches and
interpretations in contemporary history with a focus on issues of cure and
care of minors. It intend to propose a path which is relevant to this
Degree, from late XIXth C to XXth C on the interactions between the new
scientific knowledge and specialized institutions for early childhood, the
profound changes in the traditional ones (such as the foundling hospitals)
and the establishment of new institutions (OMNI and the Italian Juvenile
Court), professionals and volunteer. Characters, events and
experiences will be explained by the specific case of Florence (the
Innocenti Institut, the Umberto I, the School for Special teachers etc..),
that is internationally known and yet in many ways still unexplored
precisely in the XXth C.
