The theme of the course consists of the discovery of Greek art: the interest in the Greek world, and in the art in particular, matured in humanism; the experience of direct knowledge of Ciriaco d’Ancona and Buondelmonti; the arrival of antiquities in Venice; the collection of Lorenzo the Magnificent; the return to Greece from the 17th century; the history of ancient art by Winckelmann; the new phase of 19th-century discoveries, between philological archeology and the season of great excavations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The learning outcomes are aimed at deepening the skills in the history of Greek art previously acquired during the Bachelor’s degree and the formation of appropriate knowledge, with particular reference to the history of the discipline; to the origin and evolution of the concept of classical art; to the contextualization of archeology in the relationship with the ancient world, in the history of taste and culture; to the awareness of the value of archeology (inclusive of the history of ancient art) as a historical discipline, to the acquisition and improvement of a methodologically rigorous and correct approach to materials, starting from an accurate analysis and a solid formal, typological and chronological framework, supported also by historical-archival research, by the study of literary sources and by an in-depth scientific research, aimed at recomposing and reconstructing the topographical and social context of belonging; to the reflection on issues related to the museum exhibition, the dissemination, the enhancement of archaeological heritage and restoration; to the development of a critical spirit, communication skills and active participation in discussions both during frontal lessons and visits and exercises.

Basic knowledge of Greek and Roman archeology acquired during the Bachelor’s degree; auspicious knowledge of Greek and Roman history and epigraphy and of the Latin and Greek languages.

The course consists of frontal lessons, with the projection of power points, and exercises with direct observation of materials and requested active discussion on the occasion of visits to museums (National Archaeological Museum of Florence, Uffizi Galleries with the participation of director of the classical section).

The exam will focus on the discussion of the texts indicated in the bibliography, and in particular on the topics discussed during the lessons and illustrated in the power points. The comprehension of the general concepts and the ability to deepen individual issues are expected.

Introduction: Meaning and phases of the discovery of Greek art; the myth of Greek art in the Middle Ages; the meeting of humanism with Greek art; the direct experience of Ciriaco d'Ancona and the first drawings of the Parthenon; the journeys and insulars of Cristoforo Buondelmonti; the Florentine primacy in the rediscovery of Greek culture and art; the collection of Lorenzo the Magnificent and the other Florentine collections; the arrival of antiquities from Greece to Venice; an exemplary case of reconstruction of a context thanks to the use of formal, collection and archivisitic data: the restitution by Luigi Beschi of Nike of Damokrates of Itanos; the development of interest for Greece in Europe: collections (Lord Arundel) and travel reports; the oldest reproductions of the Acropolis of Athens in the seventeenth century; the expedition of the Marquis de Nointel and the series of drawings of the Parthenon; the bombardment of the Parthenon; eighteenth-century antiquarian encyclopedism; Winckelmann and the birth of the history of ancient art; the second phase of the discovery of Greek art between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: the interest in the temples of Paestum and the recognition of the specific characteristics of Greek architecture; the distinction and classification of the Greek ceramic; Fauvel's activity in Greece; the sculpture, originals and copies; philological archeology in Italy and Germany (Discobolus of Myron, Aphrodite of Knidos, Apoxyomenos of Lysippos, Doryphoros of Polykleitos); the achievements of spoliation (Lord Elgin and the Parthenon, the temple of Athena Aphaia inAegina, the temple of Apollo Epicurios at Bassae); the season of the great excavations in the second half of the nineteenth century: Olympia, Samothrace, Delos, Delphi, Pergamon, Halicarnassus and the recent discovery of the tomb of Hekatomnos in Mylasa. An exemplary methodological case of the reconstruction of an Athenian monument and of a topographical and cultual context: the monument of Telemachos of Acharnae, in homage to Luigi Beschi and Vincenzo Saladino.
