Ongoing guidance

The ongoing guidance service is currently coordinated by the President of the School, Prof. Alessandro SimoniQuick Guide to the School of Law

The ongoing component of the guidance service includes a range of activities and services aimed at supporting new students in their encounter with the specific nature of university study, particularly with regard to study methods, in order to prevent uncertainties and temporary difficulties from having a negative impact on the completion of their studies and to ensure that students make the most of the opportunities offered by the School and the individual degree programmes.

Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, ongoing guidance activities will be designed and implemented with particular (though by no means exclusive) attention to the needs of first-year students.

Ongoing guidance comprises three main tools, namely the new role of “guidance teacher”, academic tutoring and the preparation and dissemination of materials relating to study methods and the writing of the degree thesis, to which ad hoc meetings are dedicated. Meetings are also regularly organised on specific topics such as legal language and, in collaboration with the career guidance and placement service, initiatives aimed at making students of the three-year degree programme in SSG more aware of their curriculum choices.

GUIDANCE TEACHERS

Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, each first-year student will be assigned a “guidance teacher” halfway through the academic year, chosen from among professors and researchers working at the School, who they can contact throughout their studies if they have any doubts about the structure of their course or “basic” choices. This new figure is not intended to replace the many others already available for assistance and advice (degree programme directors, teaching tutors, administrative staff, etc.) or the tools available for obtaining specific information (first and foremost the School's website), but rather to offer those who wish it a point of reference for their entire career, to whom they can turn during the most important stages.

Anyone who has not received the initial email from their assigned guidance teacher, or who wishes to take advantage of this opportunity or requires further information/clarification, can write to scuola(AT)giurisprudenza.unifi.it

ACADEMIC TUTORING

Academic tutoring (poster) is a service provided by the School of Law for students enrolled in the following degree programmes:

  • Single-cycle Master's Degree in Law;
  • Single-cycle Master's Degree in Italian and German Law;
  • Single-cycle Master's Degree in Italian and French Law;
  • Master's Degree in Law for Sustainability and Security;
  • Three-year Bachelor's Degree in Legal Services;

The service is aimed at providing support during the course of study, with specific activities for the different needs that may arise.

Who are the tutors

The tutors are students and PhD students, selected on the basis of their experience and skills.

Objectives

The academic tutoring service aims to help students overcome any obstacles they may encounter during their studies, in order to ensure the smooth progression of their career.

Activities

The activities of the academic tutors are part of the “ongoing guidance” services and consist of equal and dedicated collaboration aimed at facilitating the acquisition or improvement of study methods and legal language, as well as, more generally, offering support in organising the course of study. This takes the form of individual support, which is developed following direct consultation with the student and may include:

  • Methodological assistance with studying for individual exams:
  • Assistance with organising the management of multiple exams;
  • Assistance with improving oral or written presentation of exam programmes;
  • Methodological assistance in writing papers, with particular reference to the degree thesis.

N.B.: The tutoring service does not replace the contribution of the lecturers in explaining the topics covered in the exam programme, which is provided during office hours.

How to use the academic tutoring service

Starting on 1 February 2025, tutoring will be provided by appointment only. Those interested in accessing the service can send a request to the dedicated email address tutoratodidattico(AT)giurisprudenza.unifi.it; specifying the support required, or call 055.2759051.

N.B.: Tutoring activities are normally carried out in person. However, in exceptional cases, it is possible to request one or more online meetings for proven reasons.

MATERIALS ON STUDY METHODS AND THESIS WRITING

The ongoing guidance service also prepares and distributes materials on study methods, to which ad hoc seminars are also dedicated. For example, a guide - prepared by the School's lecturers - on Study Methods and University Pathways (LINK)is currently available, which provides useful information, with practical examples, on how to identify the exam preparation technique best suited to individual needs.

Particular attention is paid to the preparation of papers (“Theses”) required as the final exam for the various degree courses, for which the School already provides a specific handbook.

The materials will soon be supplemented and updated, also taking into account the guidelines provided by the university on the use of information technology and, in particular, AI.

Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, as part of the teaching tutoring service, meetings will be offered to help students prepare for the writing of their degree thesis, which will be announced periodically on the School's website.
