Learning Objectives
The purpose of the course is to deal with the innovative topics of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the most recent acquisitions in this area, to explain the basic strategies for the creation of innovative and authorized biotechnological drugs, to study their structure/activity relationships, to deepen topics useful for professional activity in general and their pharmaceutical production.
Prerequisites
The course is aimed at students who have acquired notions of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and who possess Physiology and Organic Chemistry knowledge.
Course program
Innovative Drugs: definition, evaluation and requirements. Innovative drugs and regulatory affairs. Biotechnological drugs: definition and classification. Human insulin and analogues. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Enfuvirtide. General therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and their pharmaceutical production. Biopharmaceuticals for cancer treatment. Biopharmaceuticals for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (rheumatoid arthritis). Immune checkpoint inhibitors and new therapeutic strategies. Drugs for rare diseases. Vaccines and vaccine subunits: classification and pharmaceutical strategies.
