The course aims to offer the student an overall overview of the main themes of contemporary library science, the principles, bibliographic models, standards, rules and languages that relate the collection and the reader.

Guided visits to libraries are planned, including: Humanities Library of the University of Florence, Crocetti Library, National Central Library of Florence.
Type of Assessment
Students have to take an oral exam and they are invited to write an essay (about 15,000 characters, including spaces), taking up a particular topic treated in class or inherent in the course, agreed with the professor.

Field of study of LIS, Library and Information Science, in the contemporary cultural context. Libraries: social, cultural and educational role; learning, sharing and dissemination of knowledge, spaces. Organization, management, services. Creation and development of collections: paper, digital, hybrid. Conceptual models: IFLA LRM. Hints to cataloging vs metadating. The librarian: history, function and ethics. Intellectual profile of some librarians.
