Course Content
The course aims to introduce the fundamental concepts of aesthetics with particular attention to the relationship between aesthetics, language and literary forms. To this end, the monographic part of the course will deal with Walter Benjamin's aesthetic-philosophical thought, analyzing some of his most important essays.
a) F. Desideri, La percezione riflessa. Estetica e filosofia della mente, Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano 2011. For those who want to deepen the foundational aspects of aesthetics in relation to the philosophy of mind.
b) F. Desideri, Forme dell’estetica. Dall’esperienza del bello al problema dell’arte, Laterza, Roma-Bari 20093 (pp. VII-168). The book has a more general and introductory character and includes also issues related to the philosophy of art.
c) F. Desideri, Walter Benjamin e la percezione dell'arte, Morcelliana, Brescia 2018.
2) Walter Benjamin, Angelus novus (solo le seguenti parti: Scritti filosofici: Il compito del traduttore, Sulla lingua in generale e sulla lingua dell'uomo, Sulla facoltà mimetica, Tesi di filosofia della storia; Baudelaire e Parigi: Di alcuni motivi in Baudelaire; Le affinità elettive: Le affinità elettive; Saggi critici: Il narratore. Learning Objectives
KNOWLEDGE: Acquisition of the fundamental concepts of Aesthetics, with particular attention to the relationship between aesthetics, language and literary forms. First orientation in questions related to the relationship between literary forms and modernity.
SKILLS: Development of conceptual skills about the relationship between aesthetics, language and literary forms. Acquisition of a critical-philosophical lexicon related to literary forms.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge in philosophical sciences, usually acquired during the first year of studies. It is recommended in any case to attend the course.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, using PowerPoint slides and with particular attention to the development of
an interactive discussion.

Type of Assessment
The exam will be in oral form. The interview will aim to verify the student's acquisition of the fundamental concepts of Aesthetics, with particular attention to the relationship between aesthetics, language and literary forms. Together with the verification of the acquisition of basic knowledge related to the discipline, the interview also intends to verify the development of conceptual skills regarding the capacity for critical analysis and philosophical interrogation of texts and literary forms.
Course program
The course aims to clarify the link between aesthetics, language and literary forms, in particular in the context of the modern and contemporary era. To this end, we will analyze some of Walter Benjamin's most influential aesthetic-philosophical essays. The topics will be the following: the relationship between language, expression and communication, the philosophical-theological meaning of literary translation, the strategic relationship between criticism and commentary on the literary text, the connection in Baudelaire between poetry and allegory, the modern novel and the crisis of the narrative, Kafka and the theatricality of the human.
