To learn methodological and analytical tools useful to interpret both China and the People’s Republic of China’s domestic and foreign policy. Period under analysis: from opium wars (1836; 1842) to present times
During the course, attending students will receive all information and tools in order to prepare the final exam.
Non-attending students are invited to study contemporary history (from 1836 to present times) from Jonathan D. Spence, The Search for Modern China, Norton, Third Edition, 2013.
Or
Guido Samarani, Dalla fine dell'Impero a oggi, Einaudi 2017.
Different books could be decided together with the professor.
Learning Objectives
1. Knowledge and understanding:
Learning in depth the political, cultural and social transformations that took place in China starting from 1830’s.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding - read and critically use sources relating to the history of China.
3. Critical skills - Knowing how to contextualize and critically analyse the contemporary Chinese political-institutional and socio-cultural context from a historical perspective.
4 Learning skills - Knowing how to consult and critically discuss the reference texts on the topics proposed.
Teaching Methods
Lectures will be held with the help of PPT slides, videos, documents, newspapers’ articles, and other useful texts to stimulate the classroom debate and prepare the final exam.
Type of Assessment
During the course all partecipants are invited, in turns, to deepen some subject by short ppt presentations in order to develop debates among them. The final exam could consist in a ppt presentation or in an oral discussion about some topics
