Learning Objectives
Knowledge:
Notions on the mechanical characteristics of wood and derivative products for structural use, on the regulatory system for the use of structural wood, on the problems of evaluating wooden structures in place.
Acquired expertises:
Skills in the field of use of wooden materials with load-bearing capacity, in the interaction with designers for project realizations, in the use of tools for mechanical tests and for non-destructive tests.
Skills acquired at the end of the course:
Ability to set up a process for the certification of wood and derived products for use in load-bearing structures, to evaluate wooden load-bearing structures in place, to select the structural material in building sites.
Prerequisites
Courses of: Xylology; Elements of wood processing and derived products; Elements of mathematics and laboratory.
Teaching Methods
Lectures: video projection presentations; laboratory exercises; on site visits.

243/5000
Method: oral exam on the topics covered during the lectures and exercises.
Verification: knowledge of the topics, clarity of presentation; ability to reason on concrete cases; language properties (technical-scientific).
Course program
The traditional use of wood in structures. The Technical Standards for Construction. The CE marking. The visual / machine classification and the characterization of timber for structural use. Types of wood (geographical area of origin, cross sections). Physical and mechanical characteristics. National and European technical regulations for the structural use of wood. The anomalies for the purposes of structural qualification.
The technological inspection of ancient and modern wooden structures: aims and methods.
Laboratory exercises: table classification and testing tests; tests for the determination of the stiffness and strength properties of structural elements in use size.
External exercises: visits to construction sites of wooden structures
