The Greek and Latin Epigraphy workshop aims to carry out, with a participatory and seminar approach, a specialized and in-depth study on methodological, exegetical, historical interpretation for master's degree students who have already attended a basic course in the two disciplines offering them a practical experience of the work of the epigraphist.

Learning Objectives
Improvement compared to the previous abilities in reading and decrypting, transcription techniques, historical and archaeological contextualization of greek and latin inscriptions.
Prerequisites
Good basic knowledge of Greek and Latin epigraphy, acquired through the attendance of institutional courses and / or summer schools and other types of training.
Teaching Methods
The teachers, after an introductory lesson on the specificity of the workshop, will organize their classes at some epigraphical collections and lapidaria of Florence or other locations.
Further information
The regular attendance at the workshop is foreseen in order to reach all the pre-established training objectives
Type of Assessment
The verifications will take place by means of a written test to check the new acquisitions obtained in the “field”. A transcription test and a brief historical-epigraphic comment on a medium-length inscription and level of difficulty outside of those read in class or in out-of-home exercises are envisaged in particular for the Latin epigraphy. The duration of the test will be 30 '.
Course program
The workshop will deal with issues related to the analysis of Greek and Latin inscriptions under many aspects: types of materials and support, tools and techniques of execution, organization of the text within the epigraphic space, presence of any iconographic apparatus, numeral systems, dividing signs, abbreviations, paleography and dating criteria.
The study of the texts will preferably take place at the headquarters / offices where they are kept according to the logistical possibilities and subject to the regular authorization of the authorities responsible for the conservation of the collections.
