History of the staging of the early twentieth century, with particular reference to the definition of the spectacular forms, scenic and dramatic theories and analysis of relevant documentary evidence (literary, archival, pictorial, audio-visual).

The course aims to provide knowledge about the advent of theater direction in Europe between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Knowledge and understanding: Acquisition of an appropriate historical-critical framework of the main theories on the European scene between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in particular as regards theatrical direction practices, with appropriate focus on specific and relevant spectacular episodes.
Applied knowledge and understanding: Acquisition of an adequate conceptual framework relating to the practices of the direction between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; acquisition of a bibliographic and documentary instrumentation aimed at the study of European theater between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Making judgments: Development of conceptual elaboration, analysis and critical elaboration skills starting from significant sources of European entertainment between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Communication skills: Knowing and using the specific terminology related to the practices of theater direction and acting.
Ability to learn: know to use an analytical model for the study of theater direction and acting

The enrollment is open. DAMS students can take the exam only after acquiring 12 CFU in History of the performing arts.

The course will make use of literary, iconographic and audiovisual sources, which will be analyzed according to the most updated methodologies of the theatre studies.

Course attendance is mandatory to students enrolled under M.D. no. 270, whereas part-time students and those enrolled under M.D. no. 509 may take the exam according to a study program provided by the teacher.

The exam consists of an oral exam.
The student will have to know the historical reference period and be able to discuss with appropriate critical exercise documents, concepts, events related to the history of the European theater between the nineteenth and twentieth Centuries.

In particular, will be considered the guidelines of some of the most important masters of the scene early twentieth century (eg, André Antoine, Adolphe Appia, Edward Gordon Craig, St. Konstantin Stanislavsky, Bertolt Brecht, Antonin Artaud), also through the analysis some significant mise en scène
