Course Content
The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the most relevant concepts, topics and authors of the history of Western aesthetics (from classical age up to the nineteenth century). We will also analyze and comment a masterpiece of Western aesthetics, Immanuel Kant’s third Critique (only the sections The Analytic of the Beautiful and The Analytic of the Sublime).

Although the reading of the entire book is highly recommended, students are required to study in detail paragraphs 1.1; 1.3; 1.5; 1.6; 1.8; 2.1; 2.2; 2.6; 3.1; 3.2; 3.6; 4.1; 4.2; 4.6; 5.1; 5.2; 5.4; 5.5; 5.6; 5.7; 5.8; 6.1; 6.2; 6.3; 6.4; 6.7; 6.10; 6.11; I. Learning Objectives
Knowledge: The course aims to analyze and discuss some of the most relevant issues, questions and perspectives in the history of Western aesthetics (classical age, medieval age, Renaissance, up to the nineteenth-century post-hegelian aesthetic theories). Skills: Students will familiarize themselves with the main issues, problems, authors and theoretical approaches in the history of Western aesthetics and will improve their analytical thinking skills and interpretative skills, thanks to the reading and discussion of Kant’s text. Behavior: Students will improve their knowledge of basic research tools such as research catalogues, specialized websites, research libraries and will practice their argumentative skills.

Type of Assessment
Oral exam. The exam will be divided into two parts: a first part on Storia dell’estetica occidentale (2-3 questions), a second part on Kant. Duration of the exam: about 20 minutes.
Course program
The course is divided into two parts: a first part on the main themes, topics, issues and paradigms in the history of Western aesthetics; a second part dealing with Kant’s Analytic of the Beautiful and Analytic of the Sublime (from his Critique of the Power of Judgement).
