The course will focus on the major artists and genres of contemporary art from Neoclassicim to Return to Order. Relevant analytical and interpretative strategies are introduced to enable students to develop a clear critical thinking and an understanding of a wide range of artwork from the end of the eighteenth century to the early of the twentieth century.

Learning Objectives
The course will focus on the study of History of Art from Neoclassicim to Return to Order.
Aims of the course: to introduce students to different artistic genres; to analyze the diversification of languages and artistic expression; to enable students to develop a critical consciousness and a theoretical awareness to facilitate understanding of works of art.
Knowledge and understanding: students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding in historical and artistic contexts of the end of the eighteenth century and the early of the twentieth century and will acquire the critical tools to cope with the philological analysis of works of art.
Applying knowledge and understanding: students will learn how to apply processes, models, questions, and theories that result in enhanced clarity in the comprehension of works and critical texts included in the program.
Making judgements: students will develop the ability to discuss the artistic questions considered during the course, proposing critical perspectives and well-grounded judgements on the subjects included in the program.
Communication skills: students will develop the ability to argue the topics covered during the lessons, with particular reference to artistic, historical and artistic literature contents.
Learning skills: students will acquire the methodological tools needed to read and analyze the works of art.

Erasmus students: good knowledge of Italian.

Type of Assessment
Oral exam. The exam will test students’ knowledge of:
1. The history of art from Neoclassicism to Return to Order.
2. Specific issues and themes of contemporary art;
3. The key texts and critical literature included in the reading list.
Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze and critically evaluate the works of art proposed in class and the key texts included in the reading list.
The exam aims to assess:
- The knowledge of key concepts in the history of art from Neoclassicism to Return to Order.
- The ability to describe and place artistic phenomena within their contexts of production and reception;
- The ability of close reading and appreciation of all the texts included in the reading list as well as a thorough command of methodological and theoretical tools;
- The ability to use formal and critical terminology;
Students will demonstrate that they can discuss the subjects treated during the course, make appropriate connections between different artists and works, and express themselves clearly.
