Learning Objectives
The course aims to offer the student an overall overview of the main themes of contemporary library science, the principles, bibliographic models, standards, rules and languages that relate the collection and the reader.

Further information
During the lessons, opportunities to meet with experts and other teachers will be suggested, and participation in conferences on librarianship topics will be proposed, e.g.: 8-12 February 2021: The Bibliographic Control in the Digital Era. Three meetings are scheduled (classroom via degli Alfani, 39 or remotely) on the basic aspects of online research for art history and archeology, and for library science, in collaboration with the Biblioteca Umanistica.
Type of Assessment
Students have to take an orla exam andd they are invited to write an essay (about 15,000 characters, including spaces), taking up a particular topic treated in class or inherent in the course, agreed with the professor.
Course program
Definition of LIS and library in the contemporary cultural context. The "Five Laws of Librarianship" of S.R. Ranganathan. Libraries in international guidelines; their social and cultural role; learning, sharing and dissemination of knowledge, spaces. Organization, management, services. Creation and development of the collections: paper, digital, hybrid. Cultural and educational role of libraries. The languages of the library: descriptive cataloging and semantic indexing; the tools for accessing information and the "rich" catalog. The librarian: history and function. From employee to professional. Ethics, civil commitment, and competence. The international dimension. Intellectual profile of some librarians: from Antonio Panizzi to Charles Cutter, Guido Biagi, S.R. Ranganathan to contemporaries.
