Economics of Education: investment in human capital, private and social return, education as a signalling and a screening device, gender differences in the access to education, education for growth and democratization. Health Economics: demand for health; demand for health insurance with adverse selection and moral hazard; peculiarities of the pharmaceutical industry.

Obiettivi Formativi
At the end of the course students are expected to know why both education and health are important determinants of human capital as an important key issue for individual well-being and economic development. Students are also expected to be able to adopt a critical approach to interpret economic phenomena referring to the educational and the health sector by using the theoretical tools provided by public economics
Prerequisiti
Undergraduate course in microeconomics and familiarity with the standard mathematical techniques of economic theory.

Both attending and no-attending students have to register for the class on the E-Moodle platform (http://e-l.unifi.it/ ask professor for the password) and download the material that the teacher will be posting on it.
Modalità di verifica apprendimento
Attending students are expected to present a paper chosen by a list provided by the teacher at the beginning of the course. No-attending students prepare an essay on a paper chosen by the same list. Both attending and no-attending students take a written exam (4 true/false questions and 4 open questions). The paper presentation/essay is assessed in view of the final mark (points 0 or 1 or 2 to be added to the mark of the written exam).
