Architectural Technology Design Studio aims to combine the activity of thinking and the activity of doing.
It is intended to provide students with the tools of knowledge of the detailed design of a residential building based on human needs.
It strives to contribute to the formation of a vision of architecture as a field where different skills and interdisciplinary synthesis tools intersect.

Learning Objectives - Last names F-L
The Architectural Technology design studio aims to provide the methodological tools and operational aspects of architectural design, starting from the knowledge of spatial and technological systems; while considering the role and contribution of the "dimension" technique, the meaning of the project as a ground for comparison of different skills and physical place and time of interdisciplinary synthesis is emphasized.
Prerequisites - Last names F-L
Knowledge of materials and construction elements. Knowledge of fundamentals of applied physics.
Teaching Methods - Last names F-L
The design studio provides the following learning activities: Lectures, Development of a project, visit the site and / or works of architecture and / or fairs
Further information - Last names F-L
Students have the obligation of attending all the activities of the design studio. Students will be able to take the exam that have achieved a rate of ≥75% and are in good standing with the delivery of the project.
Type of Assessment - Last names F-L
Each student will evaluated according to the educational progression and achievements in the development of design studio activities. The project is assessed according to criteria of coherence and awareness in the use of technologies and materials for the specific purpose of the design subject; project quality of the environmental and technological aspects; completeness and correctness of representation and information content of the project.

Educational goals
The Architectural Technology Design Studio is aimed to provide methodological and operational tools of architectural design, starting from the knowledge of the environmental and technological systems that constitute the building; considering "the architecture as inhabited and built space by means of a technical know that profoundly affect the form of the project and its conception" the design studio emphasizes the "tectonic" dimension the meaning of project as terrain for comparison of different skills and physical and temporal place of interdisciplinary synthesis. The course aims to contribute to the concept of a vision of the architectural project as a unit based on the equivalence of the types of information and complementarity between the different skills involved in its elaboration. The design studio is in continuity to the course of Materials and Building Elements in order to put into practice its knowledge.
The knowledge, skills and behaviors that at the end of the course the student must have acquired are:
- the execution of the design of a simple architectural structure, developed at different scales of definition, by controlling the relationship between forms, techniques, materials and functional program;
- the application to the architectural project of knowledge, rules and criteria of the environmental and technological system with particular reference to construction feasibility, correspondence to the users' needs and the constraints of the context and choice of technological solution that can positively impact on global energy consumption of the building;
- the ability to communicate their own design ideas with a critical sense by means of the drawing tools.
Arguments
The design studio regards housing according to principles of building feasibility, sustainability and quality performance. The design studio has three modules:
I. Design of environmental system
- Users’ need and functional-spatial programme
- Analysis of the project context
- Organization criteria of living space (activities and functional layout)
- Space form and size criteria
II. Design of technological system
- Rules and criteria of technological design mainly for the structural system and the envelop
- Principles of sustainable design
III. Method and tools for design development
- Project representation and communication: the language of design, signs rules (dimensioning, use of lines, halftone etc.), Scales of representation and information content
- Project organization and design development phases: the relationship between information content, people and design solutions.
Teaching method
Teaching is based on short lectures supporting the design and is structured in order to give students the methodological and operational tools for the design of all the component of a building, taking into account the formal and expressive results, the organization of the building process, the choice of technologies and products proper to the available resources and project objectives in accordance with the user's needs and the principles of conservation, protection and enhancement of the environment.
The design studio includes the following activities:
Lessons - Lessons will deal with the program topics. The theoretical knowledge is put into design development and assessment.
Project / Revision - The design studio consists in the design of a "simple" building through the gradual deepening of the technical choices consistent with the functional and formal aspects of an architectural work. The project must be finished by the end of the course, regardless of the session in which the exam will take place and is regularly revised by teachers to control the working progress and contribute to its development.
Organizational procedures
The organization of the design studio is based on the effective and profitable use of the time that students spend in the classroom, in order to finish the course and take the exam in the first exam session. The attendance therefore is not only as physical and formal presence in the classroom but must correspond to a real participation in the activities and exchange with the teacher and his collaborators.
Registration - Students who wish to attend the design studio are required to confirm their enrolment by registering with the teacher.
Frequency - Students have the obligation of attending all the activities of the design studio. The attendance will be verified through the presence of signatures in a register (absences can only be subscribed upon presentation of written justification). Students will be able to take the exam that have achieved a rate of ≥75% and are in good standing with the delivery of the project.
Professor R. Bologna is available for information using the address: roberto.bologna@unifi.it. All information regarding the design studio are communicated to students during the official classroom timetable or by email.
Intermediate and final exams
Each student will evaluated according to the educational progression and achievements in the development of design studio activities. The project is assessed according to criteria of coherence and awareness in the use of technologies and materials for the specific purpose of the design subject; project quality of the environmental and technological aspects; completeness and correctness of representation and information content of the project.
