Learning Objectives
Competence goals: the class deals with aspects and problems concerning European culture in the age of Enlightenment. Relevant texts and documents will be read and discussed, as well as some of the main methodological and historiographical approaches. Every year a specific topic, in this general framework, will be focused, as explained in
details in the annual extended program.
Behaviour goals: to stimulate the critical reflection in the analysis of primary sources and to promote discussion.
Prerequisites
A general knowledge of European history in Modern age (XVI-XIX c.), with special
reference to cultural and intellectual topics.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and seminars (individual and/or team work; public discussion).

Type of Assessment
The examination will be oral, also for students not attending class or coming from foreign countries following Erasmus or other kinds of exchange programs. During the examination, questions (from two to four) will be asked to verify:
1) understanding and knowledge of historical processes;
2) understanding and knowledge of major topics;
3) understanding and knowledge of most important historical events and dates;
The final evaluation will be the result of the evalutions relating to the three cited sections.
Students can also integrate the oral examination with a written paper, agreed with the teacher, which will be orally discussed.
Course program
Culture and society in the Age of Enlightenment
The course wille be held as a seminar, whose subject will be some of the main topics concerning the relationship between society and cultural life in Europe during the long XVIIIth century. Particular attention will be drawn on aspects like literary and scientific communication, sociability and manners, ideology of national characters, the role of iconography; texts and documents will be read and discussed in the classroom.
For attending the final examination the reading of two texts, choosen among those listed in the bibliography.
More bibliographic references will be given during the first meetings of the class. For particular and valid reasons, to be specifically considered, students who will haven’t the possibility to regularly follow the course lessons will have the possibility to register for the final examination, adding some texts - to be proposed by the teacher - to the class program.
