The Course aims to retrace the paths of family as a socio-educational agency with particular emphasis on its multifaceted beingness in terms of shapes, dimensions, roles and functions, read in a pedagogical, anthropological, social and intercultural perspective. It is about understanding the phenomenon in the plurality of its facets given by ever-changing processes as being subject to social, cultural, political and economic dynamics.
The Course involves 7 readings (books and articles), including 5 mandatory plus 2 optional readings (further in-depth analysis).

Learning Objectives
Knowledge and understanding skill (general-to-specific) : the goal of the Course is to provide cognitive tools necessary for reaching an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon of family in its manifold facets.
Knowledge and understanding in practice (from knowledge to skills) : amidst the skills that the Course aims to develop, the ability to orient oneself in this specific branch of knowledge stands out – the skill allows to capture and analyse suggestions offered during the Course, being these useful for developing study and research activities (theoretical aspects), as well as for applying the acquired knowledge in practice (operational aspects).

In order to understand the phenomenon of family in its entirety, it is envisaged to:
– explore the phenomenon through a multi- and interdisciplinary analysis – thereby, it will be addressed from various theoretical and practical angles, namely: pedagogical, anthropological, social and intercultural perspective;
– retrace historical and social paths of the phenomenon of family as a basic socio-educational agency;
– understand family as a multifaceted phenomenon: variety of shapes, dimensions, roles and functions;
– observe the family through a prism of ever-changing processes being these subject to social, cultural, political and economic dynamics.
Against the background of these methodological considerations, the following topics will be further examined:
– definitions of family, key concepts, and relevant critical reflection;
– family as a socio-educational agency (actors and roles; spaces of family education);
– family as a place of socialisation and self-identification (socio-relational contexts and aspects; social identification processes; family, community, identity);
– family as a place of interaction and mediation (interpersonal, intergenerational, intercultural, etc.);
– family patterns in diverse sociocultural contexts (values, lifestyles, roles) – a pedagogic-anthropological view;
– families and minors (children, adolescents, intergenerational aspects, etc.);
– issues related to parenthood (patterns, dimensions, spaces, roles; external actors; the role of institutions; support services and places, etc.);
– gender issues : family as a gendered space;
– family in front of other socio-educational patterns and agencies;
– family transformations in changing societies;
– family choices in different contexts;
– moving families with particular emphasis on family reunification patterns in migratory contexts.
